MoOutlookSecurity - Mo' Security for Outlook!

Introduction

MoOutlookSecurity helps lock down both Outlook, Outlook Express, IE and WinZip from executing malicious script base viruses. Note MoOutlook security also works for Outlook Express (one Microsoft mysteriously left out of their patch).

Instead of using the standard Windows script engine to execute potentially dangerous code it is displayed harmlessly to the user. If you **really ** do want to run the application you need to save it to your harddisk and run it directly from there.

This application has been designed to be run in both the multi-machine NT domain environment and the more normal home environment. MoOutlookSecurity can be used to prevent:

  • Your parents from running dangerous scripts on your computer!
  • Protecting users from dangerous script based downloads in IE
  • Less knowledgeable computer users from damaging a shared machine

    • MoOutlookSecurity prevents users from executing the following files:

  • *.vbs
    		•
  • *.vbe
    		•
  • *.js
    		•
  • *.jse
    		•
  • *.wsf
    		•
  • *.wsh
    		•
  • *.hta
    		•
  • *.shs
    		•
  • *.reg
    		•

    Preventing users from executing these files from their e-mail reader or Internet Explorer means that the larger majority of script based email viruses can be prevented from being executed.

    How does this compare to the MS Security update?

    Microsoft released a Outlook E-mail Security Update that closed a great number off security holes, but had several faults:

  • It doesn't work for Outlook Express
  • It is VERY heavy handed (some security analysts even called it extreme!)
  • Once installed you cannot remove the patch without removing the entire of Office 2000
  • You cannot forward an unsafe attachment (so you are forced to ZIP it or rename the extension!)
  • Yep - It doesn't work for Outlook Express

    Installation

    There is no special procedure to follow - just the setup.exe program, or select install from WinZip (if installed).

    To remove MoOutlookSecurity use the Control Panel 'Add/Remove Programs' and select 'Mobiusware MoOutlookSecurity version 1.1' to remove.

    MoOutlookSecurity has been developed and tested on NT 4.0 and requires no additional runtime DLLs.

    It has been validated on Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows 2000

    Usage

    Once MoOutlookSecurity has been installed it is fully integrated into the Windows shell. Its use is transparent to the user.

    Future Enhancements None planned at present - however possibilities include:

  • Extending the 'banned' file list to match the Microsoft files.
  • Making the 'banned' file list configurable

    Test for IE compliance The following link mooutlooksecuritytest.vbs validates MoOutlookSecurity is correctly installed. If notepad appears when you 'Run this program from its current location' the installation is working. If you get a message box displayed and you have installed MoOutlookSecurity please contact support@Mo-Ware.com for further help.
    Known Bugs/ Restrictions No known bugs.
    History v1.4 - December 3, 2000
    - Corrected a problem when used in Windows 2000. The problem effectively prevented any script from being run, this bug has now fixed.

    - If you have uninstallation problems, please install the latest version and remove it again. This corrects all known uninstallation problems.
