NT EventMonitor - Information & Screen shots

Introduction

This is a Win32 Windows NT Eventlog tray application that monitors the NT Event logs.

If you have ever wondered if there was a way for NT to alert you that events were being logged in the NT event log then this is the program for you.

Once run EventMonTray sits in the taskbar tray area and looks like a small notepad. If you leave the mouse pointer over the icon then all of the available event log information is presented to you in the following manner:

Tray Screen Shot

App=A(B):Sec=C(D):Sys=E(F)

Where:

A = Number of events in the application event log
B = Number of NEW events in the application event log
C = Number of events in the security event log
D = Number of NEW events in the security event log
E = Number of events in the system event log
F = Number of NEW events in the system event log

The application alerts the user by flashing a red "!" in the tray icon. This can be configured not to flash by selecting the options (Right Mouse button click on the tray icon)

Future Enhancements
  • None at present. Another project is due to be started that will enable the monitoring of Remote NT Event Logs.
Known Bugs/ Restrictions
  • No known bugs
  • If the system is heavily loaded (80%-100% CPU) the EventLog notifications can be lost by the OS/Win32. To remedy this EventMon has a 30 second poll to ensure the system keeps up to date.

History

Version 1.0.0.7 [July 21, 1999]
Options are now stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
New eventlog detection mechanism to prevent late notification
NT Eventviewer now opens to the log with the most new entries.

Version 1.0.0.6 [December 13, 1998]
Added fallback check as WaitForMultipleObject on the EventLog object does not always get fired when the system is busy, or if the event log is cleared. Note I have also discovered that NT (SP4) does not always notify applications of an event log change. So in older versions of EventMonTray the number of events would not update. Even closing the application and restarting it did not solve the problem, however after a reboot all was working again! The fallback check, every 30 seconds, will detect the change in the event log and still update the tooltip information.

Version 1.0.0.5 [December 5, 1998]
Added WWW jump button to about dialog.

Version 1.0.0.4 [November 23, 1998]
Preliminary release

Version 1.0.0.0 -> 1.0.0.3
Internal releases. Never released to the outside world!
